The Zig Zag chair, designed by Gerrit Thomas Rietveld and published by Cassina, is one of the first examples of cantilevered seating, characterised by four successive planes developing with a refined effect of instability. Rietveld revolutionised the traditional design of chairs by replacing the classic arrangement of elements – legs, seat, backrest – with a continuous sheet of wood forming an inverted « Z » pattern. The craftsmanship of Cassina is revealed in the precision of the dovetail joints, highlighting the unique structure of the Zig Zag chair.
