Unveiled in 1947 at the Maison Finlandaise in New York, the suspension A1965 by Gubi was an instant success for Paavo Tynell and one of the luminaires considered to define his mid-century heyday. It retains some of its most distinctive design features; the perforated and polished brass material combined with a unique mechanism that allows the lamp to be raised and lowered to different heights. The suspension A1965 gracefully diffuses light downwards through the frosted glass, without glare, while gently illuminating the room. The A1965 counterweighted suspension from Gubi was Tynell’s attempt to add mobility to the ceiling fixture and combine the advantages of the portable and the fixed lamp. The impeccable craftsmanship of the A1965 lamp fully reveals Paavo Tynell’s talent for elevating ordinary light fittings to the status of functional art.
